*Mini Class video coming at the end
Do you like gummies? Gummies are my favourite kind of candy.😋
I love gummy bears and sour gummy worms.
I saw many posts about homemade gummy bears online and wanted to try making one day. And, the last Friday was the day!😜 I decided to try and ordered some shape molds.
I always wanted to try making these with children in the class; however, the long setting time was an obstacle all the time and I could never do it.
Now I have a blog where I share fun and educational activities and this is a perfect place to share the gummy-making activity. Right?!☺️ Get the materials ahead of time and try making them at home with your child. (It’s not that complicated! I promise!)
Homemade Gummies
Materials
- Small chocolate silicone molds (any shapes you want)
- Small dropper
- Baking pans
- Fruit juice
- Gelatin (4 pouches at least)
How To
Disclaimer: Homemade gummies that I make here are not really like the store-bought gummies. In fact, they are more like jello. BUT, the purpose of this activity is helping you (parents) to help your child have experience of making things by herself/himself, with as simple as possible preparation and setup. With some additives and more time, you might be able to get real gummies, but I recommend doing it simply so that you and your child can enjoy the time and want to do it again in future.
- Prepare fruit juice.
I used watermelon and blackberry juice from Tropicana.
They are very light juice. I actually recommend using juice with stronger flavour like apple or grape if you have because the light juice made very light flavoured gummies.
- Pour 1 cup of fruit juice in a small pot.
- Add 1 pouch of gelatine (7g) to the fruit juice and stir it until it all dissolves.
- Bring the pot to the low heat and warm the juice.
- Add another 1 pouch of gelatine to the fruit juice and dissolve it.
- If the gelatine is all dissolved, give a little dropper to your child.
- Set up the molds on a baking pan. Baking pan helps to carry and keep the molds in the fridge.
- Teach your child how to use the dropper if you need to.
- Fill the mold with the gelatine mixture.
I liked filling the worms the most! I don’t know why!🤣
*TIP: Try to remove the bubbles with spoon. If not, they will set like that on your gummies.
- Repeat the process with a different kind of juice.
Jelly-Making
I only had one baking pan at home, so I put the 3rd and 4th mold on a cutting board to keep the molds even and stable.
Sea Animal Gummy Making
- When the molds are filled, put the baking pan in the fridge for at least 6 hours.
- I checked mine after 6 hours and they came out well.
*TIP: Take one mold at a time out of the fridge since the gummies don’t come off the mold well as they get warm.
- Let your child pop the gummies out of the mold.
They have to be slow and gentle to save the small parts of the shape – like the fin of the shark, but it is a very fun process.
The only thing that I want to change for the next try is using a stronger-flavoured juice. My gummies were like baby food.😂
The gummies will be very soft – almost like jello – with time in the room temperature. If they are too soft and make eating messy, put them back in the fridge for a few minutes.
I made a snack mat for the gummy sea animals.
If you laminate the mat, your child can sort the animals under the right name.
It was a very fun process-focused activity! I loved filling the mold with a small dropper and seeing the cute gummies coming out of the mold was a great experience. I’m sure your kid will like this experience. Try it on a weekend! 😄
