The book I have for you this week is “All Sorts”.

I checked this book because I liked the cover (😁). Isn’t it interesting and light? I believe the illustrations do a big part in children books so that was a right reason for me to check it.

In the book, the main character, Frankie is sorting things. All things that exist in the world.

She lines up balls.

She lines up blue cars.

She lines up pink flowers and lines up blue flowers in a different line.

Then she starts to sort people and faces a problem.

It was really hard to sort people!

We know why, right?

After some thinking, dancing to a music and facing a mess in front of her; Once the sorted people got mixed up with everybody again after dancing, she realizes that the mixed-up-people look good just like that because they are all sorted in a big group, the “muddled-up”. And she finds her peace of mind.😌

With this story, we can teach about

  • What sorting is
  • How we can sort things
  • How a thing can be sorted in different ways
  • Diversity
  • Inclusiveness
  • Harmony

But there are other things that we can teach if we go deeper or see it from a different side.

  • Individual uniqueness
  • Different characteristics of one thing
  • Growing/Changing
  • Belonging
  • Self-efficacy
  • Self-esteem
  • Growth mindset

These things are not very apparent in the book and that’s why we want to add our explanations and discussions after reading the book.

In the episode 71 of Teacher Gela Podcast, I talk about the things in the second list. If you want to teach your child self-efficacy and growth mindset, play the episode now and learn how to do it.
