[Cooking] Pancake Mix Crepes

|| LEARNING AT HOME ||

I brought a cooking activity for parents who like to cook!

I will be honest. I am not a fan of cooking.🤷‍♀️👻 But if you are not like me and want to try cooking with your children, you can try this one. Actually cooking provides children a lot of opportunities to learn life skills.

I wanted to find a simple recipe that toddlers and preschoolers can do with their parents. As I often do for my daily cooking, I searched on Pinterest. I was craving for bread and looked at many muffin and loaf recipes. But there was a problem. I didn’t have much flour left at my house! Due to this COVID-19 pandemic, the flour shelf was empty when I went to the store last week. After many hours of thinking 🤦‍♀️, I realized that I have a pack of pancake mix and wondered if there was anything I can make with it, other than pancakes; Pancakes are boring for kids. Am I right? They have probably done making pancakes before, I thought.

Anyway, luckily I found a pancake mix crepe recipe! If you have pancake mix, milk and egg, you are good to go.

This recipe is from Cooking With Karli. Click the link for the recipe.

I just added a little bit of water to my batter to make it move more easily on MY PAN. This can be different for everyone, depending on your pan.

Start cooking

(Steps written in green can be done by children.)

Measure each ingredient and put them in separate bowls.

Put out some fruits and spread – whatever you have at home.

Mix all ingredients (pancake mix, milk, egg) in a big bowl with a whisk.

Bring a non-stick pan and get your batter ready.

If you have only one child and can help him/her to try twirling the pan, try it.

If not, while you are making crepes, children can chop different kinds of fruits; Bananas, sliced apples and strawberries are easy enough for kids to chop.

Set up a table with crepes, chopped fruits and spread.

Everyone can make their own crepe.

I used almond milk because that was the only milk I had.

I made batter in three different colours, just to make it fun.

For the pink batter, I put a drop of red food colouring.

For the brown batter, I mixed a bit of cocoa powder.

Lemon was just for decoration. I tried adding lemon juice when a crepe was being cooked on the pan. I couldn’t really taste it….🙄

It was my first time making crepes but they turned out good! Surprisingly!

I really liked the recipe from Cooking with Karli. Easy and tasty.

Follow-up Activity #1

Make a pictorial recipe.

Do you still have time after cooking and eating? Then suggest children to make their version of crepe recipe.

Cut the words out from the last page, and glue them on the right spot.

Follow-up Activity #2

Pretend play

Prepare play-dough, rolling pin, circle shapes (e.g. circle cookie cutter, circle-shaped lid), cookie sheet and turner.

Make crepes using different circle shapes and spread them on a cookie sheet. Practice flipping crepes with a turner. You can invite stuffed animals and serve crepes on a plate. 🍽

Fold them like real crepes.

The real cooking experience will make the pretend play more fun.

Try them on weekend!

I really enjoyed making play-dough crepes. Play-dough is always fun 😁
