[PLAY WITH STORY] Book "Llama Llama Red Pajama" by Anna Dewdney

You probably know the Llama Llama children’s book series. “Llama Llama Red Pajama” is my favourite one from the set.

It’s about Llama Llama being scared in the sleep time and looking for mama. He learns that he has to be patient sometimes and doesn’t need to be worried because Mama Llama is always near him and loves him so much.

If you already have this book, bring it and read it together with your child. This story is also available on Youtube.

It’s the best part of reading a book together, right?

You can ask

How was Llama Llama feeling at his bed after Mama Llama left?
Why do you think so?
So what did Llama Llama do?
What happened after that?
What did Mama Llama say?
What do you think about that?
How do you feel at your sleep time?
Do you understand Llama Llama? Why?

Asking and answering questions about the story and retelling the story is a great way to practice listening comprehension and speech. In this case, you can also learn about your child’s feeling about her/his own sleep time.

Cutting & Making Llama Llama’s Blanket

Open the book and look at the Llama Llama’s blanket again.

“It’s “patchwork“. Small squares with different colours and different patterns are sewed together.”

Suggest making a patchwork blanket like Llama Llama’s blanket.

You can bring different kinds of papers and cut them into long strips ( 1 inch wide).

Give your child a child safety scissors (with blunt tip) and ask to snip. They can make squares by cutting the paper strips.

Children love to try using a scissor. This is an easy cutting practice.

Tip: If your child has difficulty of cutting them regularly, you can draw lines on the paper strips so that s/he knows where to snip.

You can save and print this patchwork template.

When your child have enough squares cut, s/he can glue them on the template. Make your own patchwork blanket just like Llama Llama’s!

When the blanket is all covered, they can cut it out from the background.

Making Llama Llama Mask

To make a mask, you need a cardboard.

Look around the house. I had a cereal box, so broke it down.

You can draw a Llama Llama face or ask your child to draw it on the cardboard. This mask can be used for dramatic play later, so it will be great if the size of mask is similar to your child’s face size.

Here, I drew face and ears on printing papers, instead of directly drawing on the cardboard. I did it so that I can provide templates for you guys. 🙂

You can save and print them to use for your mask.

If you are using my template, you can cut them out and give them to your child to trace them on the cardboard. Cutting cardboard should be done by an adult, though.

If you can’t find any cardboard, another way is to use a paper plate.
