*Mini Class video coming at the end
We are having a hot hot early summer in Toronto! How about there where you are living?
It’s so hot and all I’m wishing is moving to a house that has a pool.👙💦😍
If I can’t have a pool now, I’ll at least look for an activity that is to do with water! Haha. Are you with me?!
Let’s do a colour mixing experiment!
Materials you need
- Watercolour paints
- Paint brush
- Small clear jars (plastic or glass if you will be supervising)
- Jug
- Water
I used the purple cup to keep the water to clean the brush between changing colours.
What To Do
Fill a plastic jug with water.
Fill each small clear jars with the water. Just about 1.5 cm.
Pouring water into small containers is already a good fine motor activity and children love to try pouring water from a jug!😄
Bring a watercolour palette with a paint brush.
Let your child change the colour of water in each jar by adding some watercolours.
At this step, children can mix different colours and observe how the water changes colour in the jar.
Have fun in mixing and making your own one of a kind colour in the jars. This is a process-focused activity! 🧪🔬🧐
When your child starts to lose interest in mixing colours,
Give
- Paper towels
- Coffee filters
- Plastic straws (cut so it’s not too long)
- Small plate
What To Do
Put a coffee filter or a paper towel on a small plate.
Teach the technique of using a straw as a dropper.
Put the straw in the water – Cover the top opening of the straw with your finger – Lift up the straw out of the water while covering the top opening – Move the straw to the coffee filter and remove the finger from the top opening of the straw
It’s a simple science experiment and even though your child is too young to understand the principle of this experiment, it’s still a fun way to move water.
So your child can move coloured water droplets to a coffee filter or a paper towel.
It’s a process art! Just enjoy moving water droplets, observe how the water droplets spread on a paper towel and see how the colours mix and change.
It was a little hard to see the movement of water on a coffee filter, so I preferred paper towels.
Dry the coloured paper towels well.
When they are dry, you can make another art with them. Just treat them as coloured papers.
I loved watching clear jars filled with various coloured water for a long time. Aren’t they beautiful? Is it just me? 😝
Today’s activity might look so simple to you, but I’m sure that your child will have a lot of freedom to try and test things and lots of fun as well in each process.
