Do you have yarn at home?
If you have yarn in a few different colours, great! You should try setting this INDEPENDENT activity table for your child.
Playing and Learning with Yarn
Materials
- Yarns in different colours
- Scissors
- 3 small containers
- Clear contact papers
- Masking tape
Set Up
- Make a small ball of yarn with each colour.
(You don’t want to leave a whole big ball of yarn with your child.)

😂
- Put the small balls of yarn on your activity table with a scissor.

- Let your child cut the yarn.
It can be done in any way, for any length.
→Practice scissors skill

- Give three small containers with labels on – short, medium, long.

- Read the labels to your child and let her/him sort the cut yarn pieces into the right containers.
→ Comparing length, focusing skills, sorting

- If you want to add one more step to this activity, you can prepare clear contact papers.
Contact paper is a peel-and-stick paper, like a decorative wallpaper.
Cut the contact paper in a size that you want.
I cut mine in a small square shape. But if you are setting this activity table for a young toddler, using a big square shape of contact paper would be better I think.

- Tape the sides of contact paper so it stays on the table and your child can work on it easily.

- Ask this question to your child.
This paper is sticky. We can stick this on your window. How would you like to decorate this sticky paper with yarn pieces?
- Let your child work with her/his creativity.
→ Developing creativity, independence and self-esteem

When designing is done, you can stick the decorated contact papers on your child’s window.

It’s very easy to give directions to our kids during activity for a better result. BUT try to stop yourself (I had to stop myself and go back to the beginning of the activity while I was designing it.🤐) I try hard to provide process-focused activities so that our children can develop creativity and independence.
Just set up the activity table, explain the materials (and labels 😉) and step back and relax.
