When You Need to Move to a New Environment – for Toddlers and Preschoolers (with Book “A House for Hermit Crab”)

Book “A House for Hermit Crab” by Eric Carle
Book “A House for Hermit Crab” by Eric Carle

This book came to my mind last week, just randomly.😄

I first saw this book in my school (my workplace). The book cover drew my attention and I think it was because the illustration was familiar.

When you just look at the cover, do you feel any familiarity?

Yes, it’s Eric Carle’s book. That was why! Hehe.

I would say this book has a little deeper lesson – than the Very Hungry Caterpillar – and therefore is suitable for a little older children. 2.5 yrs old and up.

In the story, children get to follow the Hermit Crab’s journey of growth. As Hermit Crab’s body grows, he continuously needs to find a new bigger house (shell). Moving out from an old shell and finding a new shell is challenging and scary but Hermit Crab does what he has to do with a positive mind and a growth mindset.

Points to understand and think about

  • Hermit Crab in the real world
  • Reason why Hermit Crab needed to move
  • Feelings
  • Things happened in the process
  • Hermit Crab’s solution
  • Hermit Crab’s relationship skill
  • Hermit Crab’s attitude and mindset
