Easter Egg Decorating

I’m writing this post a night before Easter. Tomorrow morning, I’ll participate in the virtual Easter Sunday mass. Are you celebrating Easter?

Today I had a joyful time decorating my eggs.☺️ Did you have time to decorate some eggs with your child? Easter egg decorating is a classic activity for children (and teachers) and I have so much fun every time I get to do it.😆 

The eggs are boiled and hard but they still need to be treated carefully, so the children decorating eggs get to practice being gentle and careful. Painting or drawing on 3D objects has something very special. It’s a totally different experience than painting or drawing on 2D objects. I loooove painting 3D things.😝

The egg decorating activity that I want to share today is a really simple one. You can try it with your toddler or preschooler. 

Materials you need

  • Hard boiled eggs
  • Cups/bowls
  • Food colourings
  • Spoon
  • Markers (Permanent markers are easier to work with on eggs but regular Crayola markers work too. You just have to be careful of touching and smudging.)

How to do

Fill the cups with water.

Add food colourings to each cup. (8~10 drops)

Stir the water so the colouring mixes in water.

Gently put an egg in each cup. Make sure that the egg is completely submerged.

Leave them for more than 2 hours. (I left my eggs for about 2 hours and the green one didn’t come out well. I recommend leaving them for longer to get darker colours.)

I think they are already so beautiful ☺️, but to give our children an opportunity to have more fun and be imaginative, we will transform these eggs into something else. 

“If an Easter bunny wants to hide these eggs, how can she do that?”

We can always add a room for creativity and independence to an activity if we thoughtfully plan and set up. If you have a time to sit together, ask questions, talk together and do the activity together, it will be a great memory as well for your child and you.💛
