Have you ever set up a sensory table at home for your child?

What kinds of base material did you try?

One of the popular sensory tables in the classroom is the rice sensory table.

I feel them. It’s sooo fun to play with rice. Scooping, pouring, transferring and dumping. 

Yes, a lot of rice is gonna end up on the floor.😝 But, raw rice is not very hard to clean up, compared to the other sensory materials. 

With some practice of “always keeping the sensory materials inside the bin”, the rice sensory table can be your go-to play setup. 

But what I want to show you today is not just how to set up a rice sensory table. I want to show you how to use this setup and create many learning opportunities – other than the fine motor practice. 

Can You Hear the Sound?

• Rice in a big bin
• Spoon
• Cups

What to Do

Set up the rice sensory bin with the materials.

Let your child play with the setup.

During the play, ask your child.

Do you hear the sound that the rice is making?

• When you stir them with a spoon
• When you pour them from one cup to the other
• When you shake them with hand

To use different senses

With one simple but right question, we can extend a one-dimensional play to multi-dimensional play. We can help our children to think from one way to multiple ways.

To help this learning process, I made up a story and I recorded a mini class.

In this mini class video, I guide children to focus on the sound of rice.

(The sounds don’t perfectly sync with my motions because I added them later on top of my video. The sounds in my original video were not so clear.😢) 

Prepare some rice in a bin with two cups and let your child follow me in the mini class.

(Oh, I added a bottle of pasta and a bottle of lentils to make more various sounds in the class. You can add more materials like me but they are not necessary.)
